Mini Mess Tins
(Split Version) One of the main container sets for the K1 Survival Kit.
There are two of these aluminum survival tins used to store the complete K1 Survival
Kit.
These
tins have been undergoing testing and there are a few concerns with the strength
of the water tight seal and the position and type of rivets used for the locking
arms. This is about as good as it gets currently for this size and type of
survival tin and I will be looking to discuss with manufactures the possibility
of developing a higher quality solution to the problem of survival kit storage
in a tin like this.

212 Small Mess Tin
(Stand Alone Version) Creating the stand alone kit was a very important
part of the whole K1 design process and I wanted to find a tin that could do the
good job of not only storing the kit but also heating and cooking.
Trangia
are a name familiar to lots of outdoor enthusiasts with
a quality of material and manufacturing that fits their Swedish origins. The 212
Mess Tin is a very rare find in terms of design and you can't help thinking that
it's purpose was always as a PSK
container as much as a cooking utensil. Nice quality grade aluminium with external
handle (the 210 has no handle if thats your thing) make this the perfect survival
companion, just fit a seam of PVC
electrical tape around the lid and your sorted.

Tritium Kit Markers I am using three kit markers inside and outside
the 'Split Version' and two with the 'Stand Alone' K1 Survival Kit.
'Split
Version K1' There's an Ice Blue
'Super Kit Marker' attached to the outside of the Fire, Light and Rescue
tin, and a Green Super Kit Marker attached
to the outside of the Shelter, Fuel and Medical tin. Inside the kit a
small Yellow
Bivvy Marker attached to the K1 Fire Rig lanyard.
'Stand
Alone Version K1' There's an Ice Blue
'Super Kit Marker' attached to the outside of the 212 Mess Tin and as with the
split version a Yellow
Bivvy Marker attached to the K1 Fire Rig lanyard.
These Tritium
kit markers will glow for over 10 years and offer a unique way of finding your
survival gear in the dark. The Super Markers are bright enough to navigate your
survival tin and even read in pitch dark while the Bivvy marker used on the K1
Fire Rig is a nice way of not loosing your most precious gear.

Barker model 1605 NATO Survival Button Compass Finding
the ideal compass for the K1 Survival kit was actually easier than I thought it
would be, seeing as there are thousands of buttons compasses out there this one
stands out.
This solid brass, dry compass does exactly what it says on
the tin, well, it doesn't come in any packaging but still it would say "Shows
you North and South by day and night, is smallest compass for a professional job".
Pleased with this little thing, made in the UK and it shows.

Ritter MK5 Survival Knife Getting
a good blade for the K1 without taking up much space was a bit of a task in itself.
After giving this much thought I came to
the conclusion that I would much rather have a single fixed handle blade that
was super tough than have a folding multi-tool that was quite good at some things
and not so good at others. Apart from anything else space is obviously an issue
here and big chunky multi-tools don't like very small tins were as the Doug Ritter
Mk5 was literally born to lie in a tin.

 | Cordage,
Mil-spec Paracord with 3M Tracers. There's
a lot of cordage, string and rope out there to choose from but I was looking for
different products with different properties than your standard 550 paracord.
Here you can take a look at the signature black and orange 3M Triple Reflective
Paracord I have chosen for the K1's Dual Whip Tin Wrap.

 | Cordage,
Mini Para & Kevlar String Cordage
that was thinner than 550 paracord but had the strength to remain useful was more
difficult to find. In the end I found these two great products. Mini paracord
which is ideal for all light applications around camp and Kevlar para-aramind
string. The Kevlar string was a good find as it is made specially for FireDiablo's
which makes it difficult to source for the right price, ideal for compact fireproof
lanyards on the Doug Ritter Mk5 Knife and the Photon Freedom Micro.

Dual Whip Tin Wrap The
signature look for the K1 when fully assembled is the dual tin wrap that I developed
to hold two different types of 550 paracord with 3M Triple Reflective Tracers.
A simple double cord whip around both the Trangia 212 and the two BCB Mini Mess
tins. The ideal way to carry 28 feet of premium advanced paracord.
Having
both black and orange reflective paracord gives you the option of daytime covert
and daytime hi-visibility in your applications with 14 feet of each with the K1.
The dual whip is a very simple tin wrap to complete in a mater of seconds, just
making sure that both lengths of paracord are cut to the same length.

Freedom Micro Button LED Torch, Covert Case, White Light, Custom Lanyard This
is one of two Photon LED button torches that appear inside the K1 Survival Kit
this one has a white beam and 'Covert' case design. The 'Freedom' is the kits
signaling light
because of it's intelligent operation and directional beam via the Covert casing.
Brilliant button torch, small design, bright beam, easy operation and multifunction
controls make this the perfect personal beam and signal torch. A simple custom
lanyard using the provided torch clip, Kevlar string and a GID Aerohead.

Micro-Light 2 Button LED Torch, Open Case, Red LED The
second Photon torch that I have included inside the K1 Survival Kit. This button
torch has a different purpose in life, it's the camp light. Used at night to navigate
around base camp when you don't want to ruin your night vision. The open case
design allows the red LED to throw light over a wide area rather than a narrow
beam. Standard on/off operation is available as there is no need for intelligent
functions and the case will fit the lanyard that comes with the Photon Freedom.

 | Exotac
nanoStriker Collapsible Ferrocerium Fire-starter When
looking for fire lighting equipment for the K1 my initial thoughts were with the
simplest, nothing fancy, chunk of ferrocerium and a nice striker. Then I can across
the this little number hiding in a corner of the Internet.
OK this does
look like an extravagance but looks can be deceiving. The Exotac Nanostriker is
probably the best all round steel I have ever used in all respects. Not only do
you get to light your fire using a premium ferrocerium but you also get a tungsten
striking head, a nice comfortable non-slip handle
and a fully watertight container to store everything. Oh yes the whole thing is
just a little bigger than a single 3inch Armageddon steel.

Match a Simple Refillable Flint Lighter As
a backup fire lighter the Permanent Match is hard to beat. A simple design that
is easy to use and maintain with a bit of practice. This design has been around
for many years pretty much unchanged, I guess that says a lot about the usefulness
of this little thing.
Eventhough I like the Permanent Match as a back-up flame the Peanut Micro
Lighter has a different form factor which appeals to me a little more. For this
reason the K1 that I use will have the Peanut as part of the Fire Rig but other
people may find the Permanent Match more desirable.

Micro Capsule Lighter Carrying
a portable flame is very important to my style of survival. Sparking is great,
hence the inclusion of 2 fire steels
but a quick flame can be a blessing when you just need to light something fast.
Matches are OK, but for the room they take up in your kit I'd rather carry something
a little more robust.
Introducing the Peanut Lighter, a tiny wick and spark
fuel lighter that is ideal for getting a quick usable flame. Also comes in a smaller
Split Pea design just over half the size of this version. I believe the Peanut
is an ideal size for the K1, a nice balance between the fuel it carries and a
usable overall size. Naturally having the choice of two super small sizes will
cover everybody, there is no excuse for not having one of these on you at all
times.

...Coming Soon...
The
K1 Fire Rig lanyard is the way I like to store my fire making tools inside
the main survival kit so I can get my hands on them as soon as I open the tin.
A simple idea that I've put a lot of thought into getting it just right for my
own needs and I hope other people will see the benefits too. Open the tin, grab
the rig, put it around your neck, you have everything you need to start thousands
of fires with you at all times.
This product was going to be launched
in 2010 but I decided to put it back because the design wasn't quite right for
purpose. Now I have the safety features I needed to make this rig what it needs
to be. Will photo and film in July 2011, great little product.
