Photographing Your Building, Light and Shadow

Lighting Your Building
Getting the best possible light is always going to be one of the main concerns with any type of outdoor photography. When you are photographing your building the time of the day and to a certain degree the time of the year are both important factors. How your building is lit obviously depends on the direction your building is facing the sun in the first place. This example has a building with the 'Hero Side' facing West.

Waiting for the Sun

Sunny days are few and far between in the UK but still it's all worth the wait. Getting a nice sunny day to take your photographs will help a lot, you might say 'most things look better in the sun' and this is very true with buildings. In the example above you can see that low, indirect sunlight is offering little in the way of good light during the morning.

It's all in the shadows
The position of the sun in the sky can make all the difference depending on how your building is situated in the first place. There will be better times of the day than others to take photographs of different sides of your building. Its best to try and take photographs at different times of the day so we have a good range of different shadow effects to choose from when texturing your model.

In the middle of the summer the sun is higher in the sky; naturally this means that any shadows will be shorter, and a good overall light can be obtained over most of the buildings' surfaces. In this example you can see that a higher sun offers more overall light and a little bit of shadow detail under the roof eves. Just waiting an hour can create totally different shadows so it's best to take photographs from the same position but at different times of the day.

Hint Warning: Photographers and motor traffic don't mix. Please take great care when out photographing your building, you can guarantee that the perfect photograph will involve you standing close to traffic.
Hint Pick a nice sunny day to take your photographs, it's worth the wait. Good sunlight will show up your buildings' textures perfectly.
Hint When using a digital camera make the most of the fact that you can take multiple photographs throughout the day to get a wide range of different light and shadow effects on your building.
